What is East Asian Medicine?
Also known as Oriental Medicine, East Asian Medicine (EAM) refers to the traditional medical practices of China, Korea, and Japan. EAM restores and maintains physical and mental health by balancing the flow of qi (pronounced “chee”). Qi, often translated as energy, influences a person’s health as it “travels throughout the body along pathways called ‘channels.’”¹ Irregular, deficient, blocked or unbalanced, qi flow can cause illness. Qi flow is improved by stimulating the qi channels at specific locations called acu-points. One way to understand qi is to see it as another system besides the circulatory, nervous, and lymphatic systems.
EAM treatment includes acu-point stimulation therapy (acupressure, acupuncture), food therapy², and Qi Gong/Tai Chi.
